INVESTIGATION OF ASBESTOS HAZARD IN URBAN TRANSFORMATION AREAS

Asbestos is the name given to a group of silicate minerals that crystallize as a result of exposure to effects such as high temperature and pressure. It is a substance used in many industrial branches in industry due to its durability due to its fibrous physical and chemical properties. Asbestos; It is known to cause diseases such as asbestosis, lung cancer, mesothelioma. Asbestos was used extensively all over the world until 1980 and then it was banned. In our country, the production and use of asbestos is prohibited by the regulation that entered into force on 31.12.2010. Although the use of asbestos is prohibited by the legal regulations, it is known that there are still asbestos-containing components in existing buildings due to its widespread use in the past years. In recent years, the fact of exposure to asbestos has come to the fore once again, as these buildings have been demolished within the scope of the urban transformation process, which has been implemented in Turkey in recent years. Especially after the earthquake in İzmir-Bayraklı on October 30, 2021, many buildings were destroyed and asbestos exposure emerged once again. In this project, which we plan to carry out as a continuation of the work we have done within the scope of the master's project, in accordance with the protocol signed between Karşıyaka Municipality and Ege University, the dismantling, demolition mentioned in the "Regulation on Health and Safety Measures in Work with Asbestos" published in the Official Gazette dated 25.01.2013 and numbered 28539. It is aimed to investigate the extent of Asbestos Exposure in repair and removal works, and to emphasize the importance of the subject by proving the presence of asbestos in the collected samples. Samples taken from different buildings were first examined with the Optical Microscope in the Chemical Engineering Department Research Laboratory 18, then the samples that were estimated to be asbestos were examined with advanced analysis techniques to be supported by numerical results such as physical and chemical analysis and measurement. Exposure to asbestos, which will spread from many buildings in Karşıyaka, which was decided to be demolished especially by the İzmir earthquake, will affect not only the people who will work in the demolition work, but also those living around the demolition areas and cause environmental exposure. In this diploma project, the presence of asbestos in the buildings destroyed by urban transformation was investigated and the environmental effects of asbestos, which will be released when demolition is done without taking the necessary precautions, were evaluated. This study was carried out within the scope of the diploma project and was supported by the Scientific Research Coordinatorship of Ege University with the project numbered FLP-2022-23621.
