PFAS HAZARDS IN FIREFIGHTING

This paper aims to contribute to the improvement of the conditions by evaluating PFAS (perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroallkyl substances) hazards in fire department. Firefighting is a very dangerous job by nature in addition to being a prestigious profession. Firefighters are called upon in many different emergencies with the potential for exposure to hazardous materials. Fire is a chemical reaction that occurs as a result of combustible material combining with heat and oxygen. There are differences in fire extinguishers according to the type of combustible material. Class-B fires are fires of flammable liquids such as gasoline, paint, diesel and oil. PFAS substances, which are called “forever chemicals”, are used in class-B firefighting foam and turnout gear in the fire department. PFAS compounds are dangerous chemicals that accumulate in the environment and human body. Firefighters are exposed to PFAS compounds through the skin and inhalation. Studies conducted in recent years have associated PFAS substances with risks of high cholesterol, thyroid disease, liver and kidney cancers. Reducing and controlling the risks of exposure to PFAS compounds is important in terms of creating a healthy and safe working environment. In conclusion, the study provides a solid foundation for future research as well as a comprehensive overview of the hazards and preventive measures of PFAS compounds.
