TREND-TOPIC ARTICLES ON OCCUPATIONAL ACCIDENTS IN ACADEMIA: A BIBLIOMETRIC APPROACH

Objective: Our aim on this bibliometric study was to point out the occupational accidents and shifting tendencies on this field in the last years. Methods: An advanced search is performed with the terms (occupational OR work-related OR “work related”) AND (accident* OR injur* OR trauma*) in Web of Science database (SCI-EXPANDED,SSCI,A&HCI,CPCI-S,CPCI-SSH,BKCI-S,BKCI-SSH and ESCI) between 1975-2020 and articles listed by “times-cited” criterion. Two authors independently check all articles, choose the top-cited 100 articles that are best-matched about the topic and cross-check their results to clarify the controversies about inclusion of the article in analysis. Chronic conditions that are merely resulted by repetitive injuries or related more to occupational diseases are eliminated. Articles related to psychological traumas resulted in work environment are excluded as well as workplace violence (intentional trauma) articles. Top-cited 100 articles chosen were analyzed by topic, journal, author, year, institution, level of evidence, average-citations per year. Results: Initial search reveals 20.736 articles and top-cited 100 articles driven from the first 598 in accordance to inclusion/exclusion criteria. Average citations per item is 168,33±101,98 (range:93-739). The most cited article on occupational accidents was “A case-control study of HIV seroconversion in healthcare workers after percutaneous exposure” (771 citations) which was published in NEJM in 1997 by Cardo DM, et al. Biggest 3 contributions to the top 100 list originated by Safety Science (10 article), American Journal of Industrial Medicine (9 article) and Journal of Applied Psychology (7 article). Most cited articles originated from USA (n=57) and National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health USA (NIOSH) was the most prolific institution. Main research areas are public, environmental and occupational health; engineering; general internal medicine; psychology and social sciences, respectively. Conclusion: Occupational accident is an important topic not only in real-life fieldwork conditions but also is very popular in the realm of academia.
